is a core metric. An AI can mention a brand without linking its website. This creates brand presence but no direct source link and usually no referral traffic.
It is calculated as the share of answers with a source link among answers that mention the brand:
- 20 answers mention the brand,
- 4 answers link the website,
- Citation Rate = 20 percent.
A low Citation Rate means content is mentioned but rarely linked as the best source. It can be improved through direct answers, verifiable facts, clear structure, stable canonical URLs and visible source and author signals.
On Perplexity, source links are particularly visible because the system presents answers in a strongly source-based way. Citation Rate should be assessed through repeated measurements rather than single answers.
How citation rate is measured #
Citation rate is the share of relevant AI answers that reference your domain as a source — measured by running a consistent set of prompts against assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini and counting the answers that link or name your pages. It complements mention rate: a brand can be mentioned without being cited, and vice versa.
Raising your citation rate #
Assistants cite pages they can , parse and trust: allow , keep facts precise and dated, structure content with clear headings and summaries, and provide verifiable sources yourself. Pages that answer one question thoroughly get cited more than pages that touch ten questions superficially.
